India is a developing economy. But as per the statistics a huge percentage of India’s population consists of illiterate people. These people usually comprise of the lower-caste, tribals as well as people with poverty-stricken backgrounds. The major reason for their illiteracy is the background from which they descend. For example, the poor families discourage their children from education and send them on errands to make ends meet. Another example is of the low-caste. These people are denied education; directly or indirectly. Banning children from entering schools is a direct way of denying children the right to education whereas demoralizing a child will prevent him from joining school which can be classified as an indirect way. Tribes usually live their lives by depending on the nature. They do not possess the power of giving their children the luxury of an education. They are helpless when it comes to these matters. It is necessary to alleviate the current situation of illiteracy in India.
What are the various outcomes that emanate from illiteracy? One sure thing is poverty. Poverty again leads to illiteracy, which then turns into a vicious cycle. Superstitions or false beliefs are another result of illiteracy. Then comes one of the most important trait the country needs; rational thinking. Uneducated Indians often succumb to misconceptions and rumors without taking a pause to think. These are the people that disrupt the existing system by causing violence, instigating riots or becoming bad elements of the society. It is necessary to contain this situation before it increases.
Who has helped to create awareness and helped in educating the masses around them. It has been the NGO’s all along.
